12 THE WILMIHGTOItf MAGISTRATES The Board Held a Meet ing Yesterday at Noon N- SPECIAL MEETING .1 Was Held to Elect a Count?- Com mluloner to Succeed Commission er F. A. Blontsromery Major W. F. Kobertson Chosen as Ills Succes sor Increased Appropriation for the James Walker memorial Hos pital. - The Board of Magistrates of New yesterday at noon at the court house, forty-flve out of seventy-nine maLgis t rates beini? in attendance. Mr. D. MEachern, chairman of the board of commissioners of New Han -over county, called the meeting to or--der, and upon motion C. W. "Worth. J. P., was called to the chair. Mr. John Mclaurin, deputy register of deeds, acted as secretary ex-ofllcio. Chairman McEachern announced that 0the magistrates had been called to gether to elect a member of the Board of County Commissioners to succeed Commissioner F. A. Montgomery, whose resignation was tendered and acccepted at the regular monthly meet ing of the board of commissioners on Monday last. Nominations for a commissioner to succeed Mr. Montgomery were an nounced as in order. W. H. Yopp, J. P., nominated Major W. P. Robertson for the vacancy, and the nomination was seconded by R. C. Cantwell, J. P., T. D. Meares, J. P., and D. J. Fergus, J. P. ' He was unani mously elected by acclamation. R. C. Cantwell, J. P., called the at tention of the magistrates to the re cent appeal of the board of managers of the James Walker Memorial Hos pital, in which they asked for a larger -appropriation in order to keep up the standard upon which the hospital has been conducted the past year. He urged that the board of commission ers be instructed to Increase the ap propriation. After considerable dis cussion, the following motion offered by T. D. Meares, J. P., was unani mously adopted: "Resolved, That the Board of Man agers express approval of a larger ap propriation for the James "Walker Me morial Hospital and instruct the county commissioners to take the necessary legal steps to authorize them to make the same." The magistrates then adjourned. Major Robertson's election as a com missioner gives universal satisfaction. The selection is a most unexceptional ly excellent one. and he will make a strong additon to the board. Major Robertson is superintendent of the Clarendon "Waterworks Company and 2s one of "Wilmington's most progres sive and Intelligent- young men. The community will be gratified that the magistrates saw proper to rec commend to the commissioners an In crease of the appropriation to sustain Wilmington's unexcelled hospital. Refused to Sins to a Small Audience 'Mile. Zelie De Lussan, the beautiful and renowned mezzo soprano, arrived here yesterday to fulfill her engage ment last night at the Y. M. C. A: auditorium, but when Hhe time came for the noted singer toTappear, she re fused to sing to the small audienoa that war assembled to hear her. Not withstanding the thorough advertising that the concert had, only 98 tickets had been sold. ' Although Mile. DeLussan could have " gotten her guarantee money, she re leased the Y. M. C. A. "Star Course" ; management from the guarantee, doing so voluntarily and in the sweetest manner possible. She could have got ten her money all right, but she said that wouldn't be consideration enough for her to sing to such a small au dience. , Wilmington has missed a great treat in not patronizing the attraction which , the Y. M. C. A. offered them. . Mile. DeLussan is not only an "extremely lovely young- woman, but is a singer whose fame is known in America and Europe." It is to be regretted that the date for her appearance here was a Saturday night. She will leave here this evening at 7 o'clock for Augusta, Ga., where she will sing Monday night. Pork Raising: In a Small Space. Mr. W. S. Walker, the well known plumber, shows what industry will do in the way of keeping the pot boiling. At 817. South Seventh street, he has a lot 66 by 165 feet, and in this small space he has this season raised more than enough meat to last his family a year. On Friday he killed twelve hogs that, netted him about 1.500 pounds of pork. The heaviest pig weighed 35A pounds. They were just fifteen months old. He has eleven more hogs to kill later. They are fine Berkshires and very one was raised on his lot. which is near the Southern . limits of the city. Mr. Walker says he previously , sol 3 $40 worth of pigs, has over $100 worth of pork on hand, and estimates his other hogs at $50. He says he has plenty of pork and hominy; i i I Si I 1 Anti-German League. 1 A number of the young society gen tlemen of this city have organized an other social club, which they have styled : the Anti-German . League. Its members have adopted f that "name 4? just far fun, and, say that their en tertainments will be of a linique char acter. Their opening entertainment will be a ball to be given at the Ma sonic Temple ball room in February. The officers of the League are as fol lows; " . President George P. James.
